What is a Registry?
In its simplest form, a vehicle registry is nothing more than a list of cars by make, model, year, and owner. A more useful registry contains information such as serial number, colors, options, modifications, ownership history, and photographs. A registry may also contain information from factory archives such as manufacture date, original colors and options, delivery date and destination, original buyer, and sometimes even original build sheets. It may also contain data or photos from public sources such as car shows, races, or publications as well as auction or sale results.
Why a Registry
The ability to study original specifications and build records of these cars provides a unique insight into the evolution of automotive technology and the coachbuilder's art. In addition, proper documentation of the provenance and ownership history of individual vehicles becomes more important every year, as the value of these cars continues to increase.
Who Maintains Registries?
The Registries listed below are the result of the dedicated efforts of a small group of volunteer enthusiasts, who have taken on the tedious job of compiling, maintaining, and publishing them. The Maserati factory also provides support for individual owners through it's Heritage Services, and can usually provide copies of the original specifications, manufacture date, and destination upon request (see link at left).
Below is a list of known registries of these cars. Some are specific to one model; others are mixed databases with information on various models from different eras. Some models don't have a dedicated registry yet. All of them are "works in progress", since they may be incomplete or contain some inaccurate data. Nevertheless, they are a great starting point and a rich source of data for researching historic Maserati GT cars.
